Itlo American Social Club BBQ Rib Dinner

On Tuesday evening, June 25th, my co-writer Southychanh Salinthone and I had the pleasure of attending the Itlo American Barbecue Rib Dinner. This yearly event kicks off the summer season for social events at the club. The dinner is always a blast and sells out every year. It’s a fantastic celebration of tasty food, great company, and the start of summer fun.

About the Itlo American Club

The Providence, Rhode Island Itlo American Club is the oldest charter in America, with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1896. You can find it in the former John E. Troup II house, built in 1881. A historic building located at 477 Broadway, a location that has stood the test of time. The building itself is a testament to the club’s heritage, featuring beautiful architectural details that reflect its storied past. Each year, the building undergoes upgrades to restore and enhance its classic style, while renovating, 100-year-old hand painted murals featuring Italian scenes that were recently discovered and restored with the assistance of the Rhode Island School of Design. This blend of history and contemporary touches creates a unique and inviting atmosphere for members and visitors alike.

Describing the Event

As we arrived at Maria’s Cucina, located in the Itlo American Club, we were greeted with the intoxicating aroma of barbecue ribs cooking in the back kitchen. We couldn’t resist sneaking a peek at the slow-cooking process, where we could see the ribs basting in our host’s homemade dry BBQ rub.

Once inside, we were welcomed by Gene Waldeck (dinner organizer) and a lively atmosphere filled with laughter and chatter. We were seated at large communal tables, encouraging us to mingle with our fellow diners and create new connections over our shared love for food.

The dinner was served family-style, a common tradition at the club, and it was a satisfying feast. We started with homemade coleslaw with an Italian twist, slow baked beans with guanciale, and Italian macaroni salad. The main course was a half rack of slow-cooked barbecue ribs, roasted to perfection after six hours in the best barbecue rub we’d ever tasted. The ribs came with a tender piece of cornbread and, of course, BBQ sauce for dipping.

To wrap up our delectable dining experience, we were delighted with a mouth-watering pistachio cannoli. This Italian classic was elevated to new heights with a smooth and creamy ricotta filling, generously speckled with finely chopped pistachios. It made me reminisce about one of my favorite scenes in Mario Puzo’s The Godfather: “Leave the gun, take the cannoli.”

Conclusion

The Itlo American Barbecue Rib Dinner is a shining example of this club’s deep-rooted traditions and dedication to culinary excellence. This event merges the art of Italian food preparation with the smoky, bold flavors of an American barbecue. Every element, from the homemade BBQ rub to the lovingly crafted Italian sides and desserts, reflected their commitment to quality and authenticity. The Itlo American Club, with its historic charm and vibrant community spirit, provides the perfect backdrop for these gatherings. There, they don’t just share a meal; they celebrate their heritage, build lasting relationships, and create memories that will be cherished for years to come. Join them next year and become a part of this delightful tradition—where every bite tells a story and every gathering feels like a family reunion.
