Prep-Ahead Dog Days of Summer BBQ Appetizers
A stunning charcuterie board arranged with local ingredients and inspired by the colors of summer is an excellent opening act for any BBQ. Think salami rosettes, sliced pepperoni and roasted red pepper strips for the red, white cheddar cheese wedges and fresh mozzarella for the white, and blueberries and
crumbled blue cheese for the blue. Fill in your charcuterie boards with whole grain crackers, mini naan breads, pita chips, marcona almonds, salted cashew nuts, fresh honeycomb, and sprigs of fresh herbs such as rosemary, mint, and parsley. Charcuterie boards double as edible décor and require zero cooking; guests graze at their own pace while mingling, allowing you time to “man the grill!” You can easily prep your charcuterie boards ahead of time, cover them securely with plastic wrap, and refrigerate until your guests arrive.
An additional prep-ahead starter such as a fruit platter may be used as both an appetizer or a dessert, and again, as a showstopping BBQ centerpiece. Place rows of fresh strawberries,
blueberries, blackberries and raspberries sectioned along a platter. Add watermelon and pineapple “stars” by pre-slicing fresh watermelon and pineapples then cut out star shapes with a cookie cutter. Dog Days of Summer: Meaning
Technically, the “Dog Days of Summer” are the 40 hot and humid days that run from July 3rd to August 11th each year. This phrase gets its title from “Sirius,” the bright “Dog Star,” and ancient historical beliefs about our skyscape.
- The weather period from July 3 through August 11 brings the highest summer temperatures due to thermal lag; which means that the ground and oceans take weeks to heat up after the longest day of the year: June 21st, “The Summer Solstice.”
- The Dog Star: Sirius sits in the constellation “Canis Major;” meaning the “Greater Dog.”
- Ancient Ideas: The ancient Greeks and Romans saw Sirius rise directly next to the sun in midsummer; they thought that the star added its own burning heat to the sun’s rays, causing extreme weather.
- The Scientific Fact: World Science and Research has proven that The Dog Star and star light does not add heat to Earth; the Earth’s heat comes entirely from the tilt of the Earth facing the sun.

“The Dog Days of Summer” are the sultry, scorching, sweltering, torrid days of summer. Far more than a modern saying, the phrase originated from ancient skywatchers who noticed that the brightest star, Sirius, rose with the Sun during this period. Historically, the days were the period following the heliacal rising of the star system Sirius—known colloquially as “The Dog Star,” which Hellenistic astrology connected with heat, draught, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, bad luck, and “mad dogs.” The “heliacal” of a star or planet occurs annually when it becomes visible above the eastern horizon at dawn in the brief moment just before sunrise; thus becoming “the morning star.” A “heliacal rising” marks the time when a star or planet becomes visible for the first time again in the night sky, after having set with the Sun at the western horizon in a previous sunset. For centuries, this hot part of summer has carried both astronomical meaning and layers of folklore. The “Dog Days of Summer,” are now depicted to be the hottest, most uncomfortable part of the summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
