The “Weekend of Giving” Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned BBQ Competition and Double Kid’s Q at The Wrentham American Legion Post 225 on October 25th-27th was a RESOUNDING SUCCESS! Organized by www.inclusivebbqevents.org the charity event in Wrentham, Massachusetts, was a smashing megahit, filling multiple bins with toy donations for “Toys For Tots,” collecting Gift Cards for teens and families in dire need during this Holiday Season, as well as providing a variety of non-perishable foodstuffs to supplement groceries for local families who are struggling to make ends meet and finding it difficult to simply feed their children. Community engagement is CRUCIAL when attempting to donate to a worthy cause, and as per usual, the BBQ Community responded with enthusiastic, generous, and significant support.
25 BBQ Teams competed in the Weekend of Giving Contest. As always, the Warhorse BBQ Teams of long service and experience were WELCOMING AND GENIAL to newcomers joining the competition, ingratiating the New Teams with open arms, helpful hints, and positive reinforcement!
Saturday, October 26th dawned crisp, cool and sunny and the day’s competition consisted of:
ONE MEAT RIBS- crowning the Grand Champion:
GRUMPY OLD PATRIOT BBQ, with a high score of 176.5600
Number of Teams: 19

The Grumpy Old Patriot BBQ Team states: “We were honored to have won the Rib Category both Saturday and Sunday. As a team, we have worked hard to get better each time we compete. Thanks to the organizers, judges, and our friends on the other teams. We couldn’t do this without you!”
ONE MEAT CHICKEN-crowning the Grand Champion:
LET IT SMOKE BARBEQUE, with a high score of 177.7028
Number of Teams: 19

KID’S DOUBLE Q,
And of course, the extremely riveting, enthralling, thrilling, and action-packed center of attention on Saturday was the KID’S DOUBLE Q, New England’s first KID’S DOUBLE Q! The two required, separate category food elements were:
- Anything with Pineapple
- Meatloaf
SOMETHING TRULY SPECTACULAR HAPPENED during The Kid’s Q Competition…
2 children received PERFECT SCORES OF 180!!!
Starla from “Starla’s Sinister Smoke,” daughter of “Sticks & Stones BBQ” and Jack, “One Nine Jack,” son of “Paddy McQ’s” both scored 180! These 2 Kid’s Q Winners are now on the Official KCBS Website listed along with “THE BEST OF THE BEST CLUB!”

Starla’s Wondrous Winning Dishes were:
- Anything with Pineapple: Mini Pina Colada Cheesecakes with Pineapple Infused Whipped Cream!
- Meatloaf: Chicken Parmesan Alfredo Mini Meatloaves!
Already a fierce and mighty contender in The World of BBQ, Starla is a 14-year-old 9th grade High School student in East Longmeadow, MA. She loves cooking, field hockey, and jiu-jitsu. Starla’s Dad, Scott, says that Starla and her Best Friend, Sabrina, have a BBQ Team called “Smoke Sisters.” Smoke Sisters will be cooking and competing against the ADULTS at the upcoming 2024 Commander’s Cup NEBS (Northeast Barbeque Society) Contest on Saturday, November 9th, in Wrentham, MA.
KEEP A WATCHOUT FOR the sensational Smoke Sisters impending eminence!

Pictured above are One Nine Jack and his Dad, “Paddy McQ,” along with Jack’s MARVELOUS MAPLE BACON WRAPPED PINEAPPLE BITES! “Paddy McQ” posted that he “was happy to take a back seat to One Nine Jack today. Not only did he have the best mullet at the event (by a mile) but he produced the 2nd best “Anything Pineapple” Entry with his maple bacon wrapped pineapple seasoned with @humphreys_bbq sap sucker (which was also cooked on a Humphrey’s Smoker!) and drumroll please…a 180!”
Kathy Trainor of www.inclusivebbqevents.com posted this commentary, “Starla achieved and accomplished what most of us in the BBQ World have never earned…She earned a PERFECT PERFECT!!” Bob Baumann of “Big Bobby’s Q” and a fellow contributing author to www.ribbqnews.com explained that “A PERECT PERFECT,” or “A NATURAL PERFECT,” means that Starla RECEIVED A PERFECT SCORE FROM EVERY SINGLE JUDGE- and that her lowest score was not dropped- which is typically how the BBQ Judging Scoring system works…because Starla’s lowest score was still a Perfect 180! CONGRATULATIONS ON THIS INCREDIBLE CONQUEST to both Starla and Jack, and a HUGE ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR ALL OF THE KID’S Q COMPETITORS!
Hog Wash BBQ and their Kid’s Q Team, “Jurassic Pork,” had a blast and a half during The Weekend of Giving Competition! Just look at the PURE JOY on the faces of these Mini-Master-Chef’s, working diligently during The Kid’s Q- preparing their meatloaf and their pineapple upside down cake!

An especially meaningful “Inclusivity Award” was presented to KCBS Reps Ralph and Karen Williams. For those RIBBQNEWS readers who are eager, recent novices to the World of BBQ, The Kansas City Barbeque Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to “preserving, celebrating, promoting and educating the public about barbeque as a distinctively American cuisine.” KCBS is the world’s largest organization of barbeque and grilling enthusiasts, with approximately 16,000 members in the US and 37 other countries! The “PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING,” as the age-old saying goes, and the perspicacity of JUBILATION is overwhelmingly apparent within the photos that Bob Baumann took during the Weekend of Giving Kid’s Double Q Events!

In closing, I would like to reiterate the quote from Mother Theresa written upon the Cover Photo of this article; “It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.” Each one of us has something unique, irreplaceable, and precious to GIVE and SHARE amongst our peers, friends, neighbors, and within our communities. The Gifts of FELLOWSHIP, TIME, CAMARADERIE, COMPANIONSHIP, COMPASSION AND CHARITY ARE PRICELESS. As the Holiday Season approaches, may we all keep the SPIRIT OF GIVING PREVALENT in our HEARTS and in embodiment towards our fellowman. The BBQ CULTURE is NOTORIOUSLY KNOWN for “GIVING BACK” to its Communities. Let us continue to OUTSTANDINGLY SUPPORT one-another in ways both redolent and distinctive. Let us CHEER each other’s TRIUMPHS AND VICTORIES. Let us put forth MUCH LOVE into our coterie of friends –old, new, and yet-to-be. And let us chart a course of RESPLENDENT GIVING with all whom we encounter.
