We all know the importance of having friends who stand by us through the ups and downs in life, Nate and Kerry Slinn hold such a place. They embody the kind of unwavering support and compassion that we could all benefit from more in this world. In 2011, the Slinns initiated the creation of Friends of Jake, a noble endeavor aimed at securing funds for their son’s friend, Jake. Jake bravely faces multiple challenging conditions, including Dandy Walker Syndrome, 3C Syndrome, and a seizure disorder, among others. Despite these obstacles, Jake continues to inspire all those around him with his resilience and spirit, a true testament to the power of friendship and community support. The dedication and kindness displayed by the Slinns and their initiative, Friends of Jake, serve as a shining example of selflessness and empathy, reminding us of the profound impact we can have on each other’s lives through acts of kindness and solidarity.
The primary objective of Friends of Jake was to gather funds to facilitate the acquisition of a handicap accessible van that would enable the transportation of Jake to crucial medical appointments, including visits to doctors, therapy sessions, and hospital check- ups. Thanks to the generous assistance provided by Nate and Kerry, the acquisition of the van for Jake was made possible in the spring of 2016. Presently, the continued commitment and involvement of the Slinn family in serving the local community is illustrated through their ongoing endeavors, such as organizing fundraising events to extend support to other families and organizations in need. Through their dedication and efforts, the Slinn family continues to make a meaningful impact, embodying the spirit of generosity and community outreach in their altruistic pursuits to help those facing challenging circumstances in their daily lives.
The Goal
Their main objective is to gather financial support through our nonprofit organization in order to assist handicapped and underprivileged local children, a cause that is truly at the heart of Friends of Jake. Since its inception, the organization has successfully raised an impressive total exceeding $125,000. Noteworthy beneficiaries of this generosity have included individuals and groups who have greatly benefited from their aid. Some of the impactful contributions made by Friends of Jake have encompassed the procurement of three specially-equipped vans to help facilitate transportation for those with disabilities, the purchase of essential medical devices, the provision of adaptive bicycles, wheelchairs, and a wide array of other vital resources. Beyond these direct provisions, the organization has also extended its philanthropic reach to notable entities such as The Shriners Children Hospital, the Boys and Girls Club of Warwick, the West Bay Community Action Center’s Adopt A Family program, and The Impossible Dream, among other esteemed recipients.
Miller’s Crossing
On September 14, 2024, make sure to save the date in your calendars for the highly- anticipated “Miller’s Crossing Annual BBQ Competition” Fundraiser, which is proudly hosted by “Friends of Jake” and Miller’s Crossing RI. This thrilling occasion is set to unfold at a picturesque location, specifically 43 Old Bald Hill Road in Cranston, RI. Over the years, this friendly competition has blossomed remarkably; what initially began with only 8 teams has now escalated to a staggering 18 teams, with enthusiasts eager to participate to the extent that a waiting list has been instituted. As in previous editions, the competition will showcase four main categories: pork ribs, pork, chicken, and an intriguing “mystery” ancillary category designed to inject an element of surprise and challenge into the event, keeping contenders engaged and on their toes throughout. Adding to the anticipation and prestige this year is the event’s official sanctioned status bestowed by none other than the renowned Northeast Barbecue Society, a distinction that not only elevates the competition to a new level but also underscores its credibility and esteemed status within the competitive BBQ landscape. Reflecting on last year’s outcomes, the overall champion was BBQ Ninja, while Big Bobby’s Q secured top honors in the chicken and pork categories. Liberty BBQ rose to the occasion with a Chef’s Choice victory, and BBQ Ninja once again showcased their culinary prowess by earning 1st place in the pork ribs category, leaving attendees and competitors alike eagerly anticipating the upcoming event.
Attendees of all ages can eagerly anticipate immersing themselves in a delightful BBQ feast that comes as part of the admission package. This mouthwatering buffet, offering a tantalizing array of savory dishes and delectable treats, is sure to satisfy even the most discerning taste buds. For individuals aged 15 years and above, tickets are affordably priced at $25, granting access to a gastronomic experience like no other. Meanwhile, younger guests aged 7 to 15 can partake in all the festivities for a mere $15, ensuring a day filled with culinary delights and entertainment. Not forgetting the little ones under the age of 7, who are welcomed at no cost, making it a family-friendly affair where everyone can join in the fun.
