Ingredients

  • 4 large Portobello mushrooms stems removed
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 whole wheat burger buns

Optional toppings:

  • Sliced cheese your choice
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Fresh lettuce leaves
  • Sliced red onion
  • Avocado slices
  • Mayonnaise ketchup, mustard, or any sauce of your liking

Instructions

  • Prepare the Marinade: In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, minced garlic, salt, and pepper to create the marinade.
  • Marinate the Mushrooms: Place the Portobello mushrooms in a large, shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the mushrooms, ensuring both sides are well coated. Allow the mushrooms to marinate for at least 15 minutes, turning them once halfway through to ensure they are evenly saturated.
  • Preheat the Grill: Preheat your grill to a medium-high heat. If you do not have a grill, you can use a grill pan on the stove.
  • Grill the Mushrooms: Once the grill is hot, place the marinated mushrooms on the grill, gill side up initially. Grill for about 5 to 7 minutes on each side or until the mushrooms are tender and have grill marks.
  • Add Cheese: If you are using cheese, place a slice on each mushroom about a minute before they are done grilling to allow it to melt.
  • Prepare the Buns: While the mushrooms are grilling, you can lightly toast the burger buns on the grill for about 1 minute, or until they are lightly marked and warmed through.
  • Compile the Burgers: Place each grilled Portobello mushroom on a bun and add your preferred toppings such as lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, and sauces.
  • Serve: Serve your Portobello Mushroom Burgers immediately, offering a delicious and hearty vegetarian option for any burger night.
